Does the employer need to set up payroll deduction for employees with Invest529 accounts?

No, employers don’t have to set up a payroll deduction. However, Virginia529 makes it easy for employees to make contributions via direct deposit (post-tax). When employees open an Invest529 account, they can set up recurring contributions with direct deposit through their employer or using their own bank accounts.

Who opens and manages the 529 account?

Employees are responsible for opening and maintaining the Invest529 account.

Can an employer offer a Virginia529 webinar to employees who live outside of Virginia?

Yes, Invest529 is a national plan open to any U.S. citizen/resident and the money saved can be used at any institution that accepts federal financial aid, not just schools in Virginia.

What happens if an employee misses a webinar? 

All webinars are recorded, and employers are provided a shareable link. 

How long are education sessions?

Sessions (webinar or in-person) are under one hour.  The presentation portion is approximately 35-minutes followed by Q&A.  

Can part-time employees or contractors attend an education session? 

Yes, it’s important that all employees have an opportunity to learn about saving for education regardless of employment status.

Can Virginia529 attend wellness or benefits fairs?

Requesting attendance to a benefits fair is quick and easy. Complete this form and Virginia529@work will be in touch.

Are there costs associated with a Virginia529 webinar or information session?

There is no contract or cost for offering a webinar or information session.  Once scheduled, employers will announce the session to employees, using materials provided by Virginia529@work.
