Experiential Learning: Music as a Metaphor for DEI
1 Hour Breakout
This program is an experiential learning exploration that leverages the difference between "learning about" and "having an experience of" to create a framework for a deeper appreciation of diversity. Workplace diversity is about recognizing, valuing, and respecting differences and reflecting this in the way we work and treat each other. It includes a workplace that is respectful, collaborative, flexible and inclusive. Harnessing diverse skills, experiences and qualities enables us to be more efficient and innovative, enhancing our performance and leading to better business outcomes. With an imported African drum provided for each participant to use during the session, this program uses rhythm and music as a metaphor for global and cultural effectiveness. The session starts with an interactive warm up and continues with a series of rhythm-based exercises focused on bridging individual differences and driving a culture that values diversity and inclusion. Participants then create a piece of music together, debriefing each step in the context of key diversity sub-competencies, achieving a real feeling of group and personal achievement. The metaphor of the collective music making experience becomes a live learning laboratory in which the participants have an impactful and substantive experience, learning to leverage diversity for lasting competitive advantage.
